The sea watches over me and enchants me

Visual artist
Manon Potvin

September 20 to November 15, 2020

A native of Montreal, now living in Magog, Manon Potvin shares a strong connection to the sea through her maternal family, who are originally from Nouvelle. "The sea, the shore and its agates, the crabs and periwinkles, the crows, Pointe-aux-Corbeaux, the cottage in Miguasha—all of these things have shaped me. The Gaspé Peninsula is engraved in my soul. It is omnipresent in the imagination that inhabits my works."

Headliners

From June 14 to September 13, the Musée acadien du Québec presents Têtes d’affiche, an exhibition on the history of women in Canada.

This exhibition at the Kamouraska Regional Museum encourages visitors to discover the evolution of women's status through... hats.

At the turn of the 20th century, at a time when women had no voice and no legal rights, their hats expressed their status as much as their fantasies and sexuality. Hats became a medium for expressing their originality and identity.

Through hats from the Kamouraska Regional Museum collection, the exhibition brings together eight concepts related to the female condition: femininity, sensuality, motherhood, courage, spirituality, creativity, emancipation, and modernism.

The exhibition features around sixty hats, each one more fascinating than the last. Two large display cases also highlight a mosaic of notable Canadian women.

All provinces and territories are represented, including First Nations women.

Capture the moment

From January 19 to March 15, 2020, painter Esther Thériault and author France Cayouette from Carleton-sur-Mer are combining their talents for an exhibition at the Musée acadien du Québec.

Inspired by the East, the exhibitionEncrer l’instant (Inking the Moment)featuressome forty haigas, combining ink drawings on paper by artist Esther Thériault with haiku poems by author France Cayouette.

In keeping with the spirit of the genre, France Cayouette's haikus delicately highlight moments of grace keenly perceived in everyday life: awe at the grandeur of nature, the nobility of small daily gestures, etc.

Each of these very concrete poems, consisting of just three tiny lines, is subtly echoed in a visual creation by Esther Thériault. Inspired by the Zen tradition, she uses various tools to mark the paper with ink, exploring the figurative and the abstract, black, emptiness, and color. Her approach is spontaneous, arising from her breathing and her gestures.

Thus, inEncrer l’instant, the combination of visual works and refined poems creates a suggestive universe where traces, silences, and resonances invite contemplation and personal interpretation.

Islands

* Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition was not open to the public.

From March 22 to May 17, the Musée acadien du Québec in Bonaventure presents Îles, the very first professional exhibition by Gaspé artist Louba-Christina Michel.

Originally from Chandler, Louba-Christina Michel works with several mediums, such as painting (acrylic, spray paint, ink, watercolor), writing, photography, and anything else that allows her to express herself.

The Islands exhibition is a collection of installations, paintings, photographs, and sculptures. The artist invites visitors to discover a body of work created between fall 2017 and today. Poetic threads are woven between the works, creating a unique language with philosophical and narrative undertones. The title of the exhibition stems from the artist's reflections over the past few years, namely that each person is a world unto themselves, an island to be discovered, a haven of solitude, silence, beauty, and violence.

Louba-Christina Michel questions the passage of time, movement, and relationships with bodies, places, and others. With this exhibition, the artist seeks to bring together several themes, mediums, and codes that speak on her behalf, both personally and collectively.

In addition to works created specifically for Islands, the exhibition includes traces of previously completed projects.
