Maisons Mémoire IV – Là Où Elles Habitent
Bonaventure, January 21, 2025— The Musée acadien du Québec (MAQ) is pleased to announce the opening of the fourth exhibition in its series Maisons Mémoireseries. From January 28 to September 21, 2025, the exhibition Maisons Mémoire – Là Où Elles Habitent (Memory Houses – Where They Live) invites you to discover the history of the Babin dairy farmhouse.
For this edition, we have chosen to highlight matrimoine and explore the complex relationship between women and domestic life. The exhibition traces the journey of the eight Babin sisters and highlights the essential role of women in creating and maintaining the home.
Built in 1875, the house was inhabited by the Babin and Arsenault families from 1901 to 2004. In addition to dairy production, the exhibition presents several sub-themes, such as homemaking, domestic economics, and women's rights in rural areas. In addition, works by Acadian artists will be on display to illustrate female creativity through everyday objects.
"We hope this exhibition will inspire a meaningful dialogue on gender and identity issues in the context of domestic life and contemporary art." – Laurie Beaudoin, curator at the MAQ.
The exhibition opening will take place on Sunday, February 2, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the MAQ.
ABOUT MAISONS MÉMOIRE
The Musée acadien du Québec launched the Maisons Mémoire exhibition series in January 2021. Through these exhibitions, it aims to convey the idea that built heritage is central to the development of a community's sense of belonging and Acadian identity. An Acadian house is a house inhabited or built by Acadians. We want to convey their stories and memories through objects and souvenirs connected to the house. The first production in the series won a 2021 Award of Excellence from the Société des Musées du Québec and was nominated for the Governor General's History Awards.
