The exhibition Les fleurs passagères is the result of research carried out during creative residencies in Iceland, Banff, and Bordeaux. The project presents, in an abundance of shapes and colors, wild plants and flowers discovered during walks in the Icelandic moors, the Rockies, and the parks of Bordeaux.

" Les fleurs passagères is definitely a project that evokes joy and freshness, in which nature reveals itself as something profoundly essential." – Émilie Bernard

These adopted plants and flowers were initially drawn from different angles, at different scales, and in different compositions. These drawings were then used in a long process of exploration in screen printing, tinged with great spontaneity. The use of this technique, which allows for the much sought-after effect of accumulation, represents a new foray into the artist's practice. In each work on display, the plants are stacked and juxtaposed, creating plays of transparency and playing with a well-defined palette of five colors.

These works on paper are accompanied by giant, improbable wooden plants, finely carved paper plants, graphite drawings, ceramic objects, and small houses cut out for delicate specimens. The artist had access to themuseum'sartifact collectionwhile developing his exhibition.

About Émilie Bernard

A native of Carleton-sur-Mer in the Gaspé Peninsula, Émilie Bernard lived in Quebec City for nearly 20 years and has recently moved to Cap-Chat, where she now lives and works. Her work has been shown in various artist-run centres, museums, and exhibition centres in Quebec, Finland, Iceland, and France. For several years, she has regularly participated in artist residencies. She has conducted research during stays in various regions of Quebec; in villages in Vermont and Finland; in the mountains of Iceland; in cities in Armenia and France; and in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. It was these residencies that led her to focus on drawing and to take an interest in nature and landscape as subjects for her research. To date, she has received multiple grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, and Première Ovation, a program supporting emerging artists in Quebec City.
