About us
The Musée acadien du Québec (MAQ) is much more than a place of history and ethnology. It is a vibrant cultural center dedicated to passing on the Acadian heritage.
Located in Bonaventure, a historic village founded in 1760 by Acadians who fled deportation, our museum offers an unmissable cultural outing in Gaspésie, providing both an immersion in history and a variety of educational activities that encourage the discovery and sharing of this rich heritage.
An iconic location in Gaspésie
The MAQ is located in a historic building dating back to 1914, formerly a boys' academy and bank, facing the majestic Baie-des-Chaleurs.
It was in 1990, following its restoration, that the building found its purpose and became a dynamic gathering place for past, present, and future generations.
Our museum is a top destination for those wondering what to do in Bonaventure or looking to enrich their road trip in Gaspésie with a touch of culture and history.
Our mission
Through its collection, exhibitions, unifying site, and human approach, the Musée acadien du Québec (MAQ) celebrates the tangible and intangible heritage of Quebec's Acadians, from colonization to the present day.
Our museum is a public space where all generations come together to share and discover a rich and unique history.
Our values
Mobilizing our community: By engaging all generations through dynamic cultural activities, the MAQ actively contributes to local life in Gaspésie.
Conveying authenticity: We are committed to preserving and presenting a living heritage that remains true to its roots, using a human and authentic approach.
Cooperation: Wecollaborate with local institutions to offer unique and enriching experiences.
Creative mediation: The museum uses an innovative approach to make Acadian culture accessible to all.
Our history
Thanks to Juliette Gauthier-Barette's tenacity and passionate work, the Musée historique acadien opened its doors in 1960, just in time for Bonaventure's bicentennial anniversary. It was first set up in the Robin buildings, then moved to the public hall in 1974, and finally relocated from Grand-Pré Street to its current spot in 1977.
In 1987, the Museum acquired the collection of the Musée de Carleton, which had been closed since 1979 and was also founded by a woman, Évelyne Allard-Landry.
It was finally in 1990, following its restoration and recognition by the Ministry of Culture and Communications, that the museum developed its current vocation to become the Musée acadien du Québec.
Today, the MAQ has established itself as an essential reference point for cultural tourism in Gaspésie.
