Operation Santa Claus in Gaspésie CCBDC Acadian Museum of Quebec Make a donation Become Santa Claus

The Baie-des-Chaleurs Chamber of Commerce (CCBDC) and the Acadian Museum of Quebec (MAQ) are joining forces to launch the27thOperation Santa Claus campaign in the Gaspé Peninsula. The public is invited to show solidarity by helping to create magical moments for disadvantaged children. The financial pressure on many households makes it difficult to celebrate Christmas. The painful choice between putting food on the table or buying gifts for children is obvious, but heartbreaking.

Increasing demand in the Gaspé Peninsula

Every year brings its own set of challenges for Operation Santa Claus. Last year, despite the constraints of the pandemic, the foundation managed to fulfill the requests in 494 letters from children in the region. This year, the CCBDC and MAQ expect to receive around 550 requests from children in the region, a 25% increase over the last four years.

“Although most children ask for toys, books, or clothes, we are discovering that poverty has a completely different face, as many young people do not ask for treats because they lack the basics. Among the special requests, some children need items to move into an apartment, while others need electronic equipment for their studies. This year promises to be even more significant in terms of requests. This increase is attributable to the addition of two new organizations in the region that will be served by the foundation: the Côte-de-Gaspé L'Équipage community social pediatrics center (CPSC) and the Gaspésie Sud l'Accroche-Cœur community social pediatrics center."

Maurice Quesnel, Director of the Baie-des-Chaleurs Chamber of Commerce.
