Memory Houses
A new series of exhibitions created and produced by the Musée acadien du Québec
Temporary exhibition available from February to June 2021
The Musée acadien du Québec (MAQ) is proud to present its new project, Maisons Mémoire. A series of temporary exhibitions, produced by the MAQ and based on historical research on houses and buildings in our region. The first temporary exhibition in the series will highlight the fabulous history of the Arsenault-Gallagher house in Petit-Bonaventure.
Throughout this series, the houses on display will have been inhabited and/or built by Acadians. Beyond their architectural features, the series highlights the historical and social values of these places of memory. We want to convey their stories through objects and memories passed down from one generation to the next. The MAQ thus aims to raise awareness and appreciation of the richness and diversity of Acadian built heritage in Quebec, as well as to sensitize the public to its conservation.
"The concept chosen for this exhibition is thematic. In other words, the nature of the exhibition has been conceptualized around the different owners of the house, in the form of a timeline. We wanted to convey some of their memories to the public."
— Laurie Beaudoin, curator.
This first exhibition in the Maisons Mémoire series traces the history of the Arsenault-Gallagher house through the lives of three of its owners. More than 100 hours of historical research by historian Michel Goudreau and Marie-Josée Dugas, co-owner of La Ruelle, made this project possible. The exhibition bears witness to the sociological and historical realities of the house and the families who lived there. Several objects and archival documents on display highlight the development of an entire community.
