OUR HISTORIC BUILDINGS
The Secrets d'Acadiens pavilion is a former saltworks dating from the mid-19th century, owned by Charles Robin and Company. Established in Baie-des-Chaleurs in 1767, it was the largest fishing company in eastern Canada. Its ships transported dried cod renowned for its high quality, mainly to Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Brazil.
Originally, the pavilion was located at the end of the beach close to the Bonaventure lighthouse. It was moved around 1900 behind the former Robin store on Grand-Pré Avenue. There was also a small dried cod shed, which now houses the Espace Indigo pavilion specializing in contemporary art.
Right next door, an old forge belonging to the same company, renamed Pavillon Évangéline, displays works by local artisans in a warm and intimate atmosphere. Together, these three buildings bear witness to the economic development of Baie-des-Chaleurs.
The Musée acadien du Québec thanks SODEC for its financial support.
