Description of the object

Document certifying that Ms. Éléonore Arsenault has fulfilled the requirements to obtain her intermediate elementary school teaching certificate (template).

Value of the item

This document bears witness to the life of Éléonore Arsenault, a person of Acadian origin from Bonaventure, and, in this case, to her obtaining her teaching certificate in French for intermediate elementary school in 1915. A note specifies that Miss Éléonore Arsenault was born on November 1, 1896. The certificate was issued by the Central Office of Catholic Examiners of the Province of Quebec, and Miss Arsenault even earned a distinction.

The document also bears witness to the development of Quebec society in general and the school system in the Petites-Cadies in particular. In 1894, the Bonaventure parish granted land for the construction of a model school on its property, which later became the Saint-Rosaire convent. It is therefore highly likely that Éléonore Arsenault taught at this school.

In the early 1840s, elementary schools, academies, and model schools provided primary education. Around 1872, primary education was divided into two types: elementary schools and model (or higher) schools. Several model schools were converted into convents. It should be noted that secondary education was different at that time and was provided by both private and public institutions.
