Suzanne Guité Project – public residency showcase
October 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Gospel Chapel.
The Suzanne Guité Project (working title) is a musical and theatrical work by Gaspé composer Mathilde Côté. From October 4 to 6, a creative workshop related to the project will take place at the Tracadièche studio in Carleton-sur-Mer with the composer and a dozen Gaspé choristers.
To present their work, the choir members and composer invite you to a public residency event at the Musée acadien du Québec on October 6 at 2 p.m.
In a friendly setting, you will hear excerpts of vocal music and have the opportunity to learn more about the project and Gaspé artist Suzanne Guité.
A few words here about Suzanne and the "why" behind the project:
Suzanne Guité was born in 1926 in New Richmond, then her family moved in 1936 to Percé. At the age of 17, she left to study art in Chicago, Paris, and Florence with renowned masters. In 1951, while studying in Florence, she met the painter Alberto Tommi. They married and returned to Percé. In 1956, the couple founded the Percé Art Center. Active and prolific in the 1960s and 1970s, her work includes wood and stone sculptures, as well as murals, tapestries, and watercolors. A young widow and visionary woman, she raised her four children, managed the Art Center, and pursued her career as an artist, traveling throughout Europe and America. On February 6, 1981, she was murdered by her second husband in her home in San Agustín Etla, near Oaxaca in Mexico. It was Suzanne Guité's determination and desire to express herself that inspired composer Mathilde Côté to focus on her character to the point of wanting to set her story to music.
